In some stillwaters there is just a ton of baitfish. When trout key in on the baitfish balls, the effectiveness of other patterns often falls off. I’ve come up with a series of flies meant to mimic schooling balls of baitfish with a system that can be modified to fish a variety of stillwater lines. From washing lines up in the first foot or two to probing the depths with parabolics, this system can cover whichever depth the fish are chasing bait. Each fly is about 2″ in length.
Bob’s Booby Baitfish Ball includes a set of: Bob’s Booby Baitfish, Bob’s Unweighted Baitfish, and Bob’s Weighted Baitfish.
- This set fishes well on a parabolic line to mimic the verticality of schooling baitfish.
- Fish this on some sort of slow sink or floating line to stay way up in the water column
Bob’s Balanced Baitfish Ball includes a set of: Bob’s Balanced Baitfish, Bob’s Weighted Baitfish, and Bob’s Unweighted Baitfish
- This set is great under an indicator and can be set up to cover a wide range of depths.
- I particularly like throwing this on a hover or intermediate line and counting it down to a certain depth. Go as deep as you need to!

Great fly pattern for still water. When I used it the trout hit it hard!

I’ve had a ton of fun fishing this baitball rig. I’ve caught fish in every stillwater I’ve thrown it. I tend to do best with the Booby version. Give this setup a shot!
